Climate Challenge Hits Home
Climate change is no longer a distant threat for Botswana — it’s here, and it’s personal. From prolonged droughts and shifting rainfall patterns to water scarcity and food insecurity, communities across the country are already feeling the heat.
But amidst the challenge lies an opportunity: to reimagine how we adapt, and more importantly, who leads the change.
Why Local Leadership Matters
Traditional top-down climate interventions often fall short. They fail to consider the unique realities, cultural knowledge, and priorities of local communities. That’s why the world is increasingly turning to Locally Led Adaptation (LLA) — a model that empowers communities to take the lead in designing and delivering solutions that work for them.
In Botswana, where rural livelihoods, youth aspirations, and ancestral knowledge intersect, LLA isn’t just relevant — it’s essential.
Youth Unlimited Network in Action

Where Do We Go From Here?
As Botswana continues to invest in national climate strategies, we urge policymakers, donors, and partners to invest in grassroots leadership, not just infrastructure. The communities closest to climate impacts are also the ones closest to the solutions.
Locally Led Adaptation isn’t a trend — it’s a necessity. And young people are ready to lead the way.
